This Generation is NOT the most UNchurched in history!!!

I’ve said it before, “The generation after my generation is the most unchurched generation in the history of the world…and we need to act or (fill in your doom and gloom statement here.)”
Statistics show that the church is declining (at least it is in America.)
However, I’ve recently ran across an idea in the Scriptures that totally blow the theory up that the next generation is the most unchurched generation…because…
2,000 years ago the entire WORLD was UNCHURCHED!  (Uh…that would make it the most unchurched generation EVER!)  Seriously, 0% of the population OF THE WORLD went to church.
Then Jesus did that thing in Caesarea Philippi (see Matthew 16:13-19) where He literally launched the church.  (I love it that He went to a pagan city to do it!)
There were around 12 people there–TWELVE!!!  (I’m still thinking this was the MOST unchurched generation in history!)
By the time we get to Acts 1:15 we have about 120 people in the church…and we see that they…
  • Were filled with vision from Jesus
  • Focused on Jesus and His resurrection
  • Empowered by the Holy Ghost
  • Focused on God’s Word
  • Not obsessed with keeping religious people happy (which cost many of them their lives!)
And the result…by the time we get to Acts 2:41 we see that church attendance had increased significantly, then in Acts 4:4 we see it continuing to grow…and by the time we reach Acts 5:14 Luke (who wrote the book of Acts) had actually stopped counting it had gotten so huge.
AND…I believe the church has as much potential in today’s world as they did back then!!!  We just need to get our focus back…which was…
  • Were filled with vision from Jesus
  • Focused on Jesus and His resurrection
  • Empowered by the Holy Ghost
  • Focused on God’s Word
  • Not obsessed with keeping religious people happy (which cost many of them their lives!)
Let me say it one more time…we have as much potential as the early church did…and instead of sitting around and complaining about the condition of the church we should step up and simply get back to the roots of why we’re doing this thing in the first place.
I say if God did what He did in the book of Acts He can do greater things today!
Let’s pray for that!
Let’s work towards that!
And let’s reach this entire WORLD with HIS GOSPEL!!!   Because…
OUR church can do exactly what God has called it to do!
He reigns…and when we RECOGNIZE Him we will RESPOND in faith!
Let’s GO FOR IT!

The Journey

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will direct your paths." - Proverbs 3:5-6

We must stay focused on Jesus. It's when we lose our focus that our belief falls away and we follow our own line of thinking. When our focus is off the almighty, our minds wander aimlessly along the path of "what will we do," "how will we make it." If we can just stay focused on Jesus, stay in His word, remember His promises, not waiver off the trail He has forged for us. Listening to, thinking on anything that is not entirely the Truth brings remorse, repercussions, pain.

Even Abraham at times thought he knew better than God and acted on those very thoughts. But his thoughts were not God's thoughts. God knows all. We know very little in comparison.

Worry ... bring anxiety ... which brings separation from the almighty Father.

Satan wants us to worry - then we will do things not pleasing to the Lord.

The future is not ours to know. The present is where we are currently. The past we have come through.

The future is everything past this moment. As the moments go by our future becomes our present and then our past.

Love each moment for the Lord, to the Lord. Plan your moments as to the Lord, to His glory. Do not look this way and that way. Stay tuned to the one who truly cares for us.

"When I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me." (Micah 7:8)

When I pass through the waters of life, the fires that try to consume me, the Lord my God will be with me. He will protect me. I will not be burned, I will not be overwhelmed. He will lead me, guide me over the paths of darkness I see before me. He will make the rough spots even so I will not trip and fall. (paraphrase of Isaiah 43:2)

And even though I pass through the valleys of intense pain and suffering, the fear that attempts to stifle me will not because of my God and Savior who is always with me. (paraphrase of Psalm 23:4)

There is no hope except in you Lord Jesus.
There is no one to trust wholly, completely, except you Lord Jesus.
No one can remove the fears that seek to swallow me. No one, that is, except you Lord Jesus.

"Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in you." (Psalm 56:3)

I believe in the Lord Jesus. I believe what I say I believe. I have witnessed His power  - His mighty hand has been upon me. He will not leave me. He remains steadfast. I must not allow any doubt to get the best of me. Doubt is fear. I have nothing to be afraid of. Jesus is right there beside me, holding my hand and bringing me soothing relief.

Close the gate. ... To all that works against you.
Close the gate to your doubts and fears.
Close the gate and move on. Hand in hand with Jesus walk on.
Close the gate. Forge ahead. Ignore the enemy. Follow Jesus.
Jesus will help me overcome all my fears.

I am no better than any other.

The only difference, perhaps, is that I know I am a sinner. Jesus accepts me anyway. He offers me grace. He brings peace to my soul. When I accept Him and believe in and on Him, I can rest in His fold. Like the sheep gone astray and found.

When we stay true to all He says and obedient to His instruction it reveals our love for Him. He loves us so much he died for us. We love Him so much we stay true and obedient to Him, even unto death.

No amount of pain we suffer will ever be as much as Jesus' pain that He suffered on the cross at Calvary when He took ALL of mankind's sin upon His shoulders, His body, and gave up the ghost and died. Oh but he rose again. What glory.

Every moment I live is one moment closer to being with Jesus

The servant church

What would happen if someone attended church but never served as a volunteer?  That person might grow in knowledge of God's Word, but without serving others, they would likely never understand the power of that knowledge. If everyone attended church but never volunteered, there would be no "first impressions" ministry, children programming, or music.  It takes teams of volunteers to make the church effective.

On the other hand, what would happen if someone volunteered during the church services but never participated in worship?  That person's heart for helping others might grow, but he or she would likely lose sight of the most important purpose, the vision behind serving.  In addition to missing the teaching and the corporate worship, this person would miss hearing the heartbeat of the church.  If everyone volunteered but never participated in worship, the church would quickly become unhealthy.  We'd lack the encouragement from both the message and from other Jesus followers that we need to take steps in our faith journeys.

The solution is to encourage people to alternate between service and student. We don't want people serving for months and months without attending corporate worship. If they do, they lose the vision and forget why they're serving.  They start to serve out of duty rather than joy.  That's not healthy for their spiritual growth, and it's not healthy for the church.

People need to experience corporate worship, biblical teaching, and authentic relationships.  All of that is encouraged through attending a worship service; however, it takes a team of people not one single person to provide the best experience possible.

For those of you not yet convinced, dictatorship and a one man show is gone so get over it. When the church (not serving God) (the church) surpasses your love for your family and friends, you have missed the whole meaning and reason behind servant-hood and why we serve at our place of worship. Church is for people to learn how to serve a hurting world. If your family is not serving in the church then you are using the church as a stumbling block to your family and also to our new growing generation behind them. This generation will never adhere to that type of mentality. You must erase the idea that you have everyone’s spiritual life figured out, and that it’s your way or the highway. By living and acting this way we are missing the real reason we were put here in the first place. To guide others to Christ through servant-hood. Until your mind is transformed, you will not grow nor will the church you serve become what God put it here to be and that is, to become a city of Refuge. To Love, Guide and Serve the unchurched. If we are doing this then God will do His part and transform them.

Risk, Care, Dream, Expect

RISK more than others think is safe...Dr. King said, "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."...in Hebrews 11 it says that Abraham was called out of a familiar place (his comfort zone) and sent somewhere NOT KNOWING WHERE HE WAS GOING...if you're going to take the road less travelled, you're going to have to remember that God has not given you a spirit of fear (intimidation), but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind...recklessness can lead to destruction, but risk-taking is what faith is all about...stop worrying about what others think is safe...

CARE more than others think is wise...love never fails, and one reason that it doesn't is that it's not confined to the limits of logic...go back and read Paul's description of the God-kind of love in I Corinthians 13 (read it in several translations to get the full effect), and tell me that anything about what he said there is logical...love and care and compassion and empathy and understanding are all illogical...Jesus talked about a whole new way to love, and said that the validity of all the law and the prophets was based entirely on how that love is expressed...stop being bound by what others think is wise...

DREAM more than others think is practical... George Bernard Shaw said, “Some men see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say 'Why not?”...if you're a dreamer who expects to see his or her dreams manifested in this lifetime, you're going to have to become accustomed to people telling you that your dreams are nonsense...you also have to develop the skill to completely ignore them...the Scriptures tell us that there is safety in the multitude of counselors, but dreamers don't live in the safety zone...God wants to do even more through you than you can ask or think...why settle for what others think is practical?...

EXPECT more than others think is possible...whatever is going on in your mind is what you are attracting to yourself...we are like magnets...like attracts like...you become AND attract what you think...every thought has a frequency, and sends out a magnetic energy...when you connect with a community of other risk-taking, caring dreamers who have a spirit of expectancy (like CPCC), you enter a whole new field of possibility...it makes it much easier to stop being preoccupied with what some others think is impossible...walk in an attitude of expectancy today...anything can happen!

Cultural Engagement

All true Christians become familiar with the Great Commission early in their spiritual lives. At the same time, there is another mandate in the Scriptures that is equally massive in terms of obligation and resulting implications: the dominion mandate of Gen. 1:28. Further, we are told by our Lord to be salt and light that men might see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven (Matt. 5:13-16).
Certainly these directives are interconnected and are all grounded in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Yet, few believers understand the profound duty placed upon us in these areas.
Neither do we realize the consequences for that failure of understanding. There are a large number of Christians shy away from thinking about culture or seeing any load placed upon them concerning cultural influence. Just what does it mean to be in the world but not of the world?
While such influence must be accomplished in every sphere of our cultural context from the arts, to the markets, to the entertainment industry, to the sciences, to the political arena, etc., precious few see the necessity of such engagement or even care. A failure to see in this regard is the sure pathway to the Exclusion and then the ban of Christianity altogether. In short, we must involve ourselves in cultural engagement. Beyond what I have just stated: “why?”
1.  We must engage the culture because kingdom advance is why we’re here.
There are two competing kingdoms in this world, God’s and Satan’s; though they are not on equal footing. Certainly God is sovereign over all things. Yet, He has chosen to advance His kingdom primarily through the influence of believers. He uses us to put His enemies under His feet through the preaching of the gospel (1 Cor. 15:25). If we fail to do so, the Kingdom of Satan continues to encroach upon the Kingdom of God in the world.
For example, the Kingdom of Darkness encroaches in regard to our biggest social issues. Simply consider a few of the massive concerns before us in this culture: abortion, euthanasia, cloning, the homosexual agenda, etc. Pharmacists are required in some places to dispense the morning after pill even if it violates their consciences. In these citations alone the moral breakdown of our culture combined with the erosion of personal liberty has served to advance evil in our culture in an unprecedented way.
Further, the Kingdom of Darkness encroaches in regard to our deepest philosophical commitments. One need only cite the dynamics of political correctness, postmodernism, hate speech legislation, and the like to sound the alarm. A day is fast approaching when the gospel itself will be banned in this country if the tide is not turned.
Perhaps the most chilling implication is that the Kingdom of Darkness encroaches in regard to our prized treasure: our children. A moral agenda vastly different from the average evangelical’s has taken hold in the public school system. Biblical values are out while evolution, socialism, and homosexuality are in.
Now, we are here to encroach on Satan’s kingdom with the power of Christ in the gospel of grace. Of course, we are not talking about forced Christianity. At issue here is gospel advance for the salvation of souls, the glory of God, and the betterment of the lives of all people in the society in which God has placed us. The better of the lives of others is implied in the preserving influence we have as the salt of the earth. Further, the Lord Jesus said, “I will build my church and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it (Matt. 16:18).” The picture here is that of the church advancing even as the gates of Hell attempt to hold that Kingdom from encroaching into its (so-called) territory. Those gates cannot keep Christ from accomplishing His purpose.
Again, in part, Christ accomplishes His purpose through us as He has given us a commission to make disciples of all nations. If we cannot see the degeneration of depraved man all around us and the need for gospel advance, then indeed we are the ones who are blind. At the same time, if we cannot affirm the power of Christ and His gospel and go forth with confidence then we do not understand who we are or what we have in the gospel. A definition of evangelism I’ve embraced and taught over the years is quite simple: “Being, doing, and telling the gospel of the Kingdom of God in order that, by the power of the Holy Ghost, people and structures may be converted to the lordship of Jesus Christ.” Note the kingdom emphasis: “the gospel of the Kingdom of God.” The only way for people and structures to be converted to the lordship of Christ is for God’s people to engage those people and structures. We must engage in cultural engagement.
2.   We must engage the culture because God deserves glory in every sphere.
In the definition of evangelism cited above, not only are people to be converted to the lordship of Christ but so too are structures. Of course, we could add the fact that ideas are to be converted as well. Paul noted, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:3-5).” If God deserves glory in every sphere, then He is to be acknowledged in every sphere. Such a truth has great implications for prayer from a Christian at the opening of a football game or council meeting. Further, if God deserves glory in every sphere, then He is to be influential in every sphere. Of course God has influence in those spheres in which His people are engaged: hence the need for cultural engagement.
3.   We must engage the culture because Christians are misguided in their approach.
Some Christians understand the need of the hour and are engaging the culture. The problem lies in the fact that they are taking the wrong tack. Christ Himself said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from here (Jn. 18:36)." Christ is not building a physical kingdom but a spiritual one.
Many evangelicals have the wrong goal when it comes to cultural engagement. Too often the goal is a mere moral nation through government coercion. Or, too often the goal is a completely Christian nation through government coercion.
We cannot force anyone to be a Christian nor do we have the right to make such an attempt. Not only is the Holy Spirit the only one who can accomplish such a transformation but the New Testament advocates freedom for all human beings. People have the freedom to be wrong about whom God is.
Other religious movements are wrong in their method. While Christians must be active in the political arena, they must never come to believe that politics or government can or will change the world. We want Christian influence in the public square but such influence must always be connected to the lordship of Christ and the exposition of the gospel in that context. At the same time, partnering with those of other faiths for social change will not do in this effort. Our efforts in regard to social issues must never be divorced from the gospel we believe. Partnering with unbelievers even for a good cause will necessarily compromise the gospel we must preach in that framework.
So, we must engage the culture. Part of that requires that we point out to our brothers and sisters in Christ the error of their approach and do it right for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.
4.   We must engage the culture because we need not waste our lives.
A major problem, even in biblically sound churches today, is that the vast majority of individuals are focused on themselves rather than kingdom advance. The pursuit of the American Dream supersedes pursuit of the gospel. We need a fresh understanding of why God put us here and the reward we stand to gain on that great day.
Don’t waste your life! At the end of your days, you will not regret the things you did but you will most certainly regret the things you did not do. This reality will hold true with particular reference to what you do or do not do for the sake of kingdom advance if you are a true believer. Paul wrote, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is (Eph. 5:15-17).”
In reading something like the above, we might well ask, “Is there a need for cultural engagement even among Christians?” O how there most undoubtedly is. Don’t waste your life answering pub questions when as a believer you have the answers to life’s ultimate questions. Engage the culture.

Barriers between Us

I think it is fair to say that people, in general, like to talk. Some like to talk more than others do. My wife has said to me more than a couple times that I am a pretty good talker.
If my call was really that important, an actual person should have answered the phone rather than you the machine!  I could sit and write all day telling you of many types of, frustrations I have dealt with but whether it is a voice mail or an automated phone system I would only be addressing a symptom of a much larger problem we all face. That is, more and more Barriers are being built between people. Some are physical barriers, some are electronic and some are psychological. However, it is important to recognize that barriers do exist and machines are taking over the telecommunications arena and, even worst more people are choosing to live their lives in communities where they are gated barring the outside world from entering. There are several of these gated communities in the area where I live. barriers, when our cars run out of gas we can purchase gas with the, Pay at the Pump feature and never communicate with a live person.  Even banks would rather their customers do their banking on-line instead of, walking into the bank.
The News recently stated that, on-line Bill Pay will exceeded, Mail-in Bill Pay soon, we will soon be using only Self-Checkouts  at the grocery store, avoiding yet another potential conversation with a human being. We are right now able to buy on-line Music, Books, Electronics, Kitchenware, Clothing and many other items You might even be surprised to learn that there is an, Online Church where one can Worship and be Safe from having to Communicate with anyone in person Wow!
Social Media, has become the communication method of choice for many including myself.  In many ways, it helps us keep in better contact with each other. Social Media allows me to keep in daily contact with friends and business matters from around the country and world. There are many advantages to all of this. However, this medium of virtual communication is a poor substitute for a phone conversation or a real Face-to-Face meeting with a living breathing human being.
There are some who are against the social media outlets and other technological advances. I am not. There are many ways that, technology can be used to make life better but, on the other hand, if one so chooses could allow it to isolate oneself from others. Voice mails are often ignored or overlooked.  Emails can go unanswered and a friendly hello can fall on seemingly deaf ears. There is a credit card company currently running and promoting a contest in which the grand prize winner will receive his/her own private Island. As most of you know, in the past, there have been many stories written about being stranded on a deserted island. And, in many of these stories, the main character tries desperately to get off the island. Have we come full circle to the point where many of us, want to stay on the island in an attempt to achieve happiness by, being alone? Can we be happy by living alone and, isolated from others?  I don’t think so.
A few weeks ago, there was a story about a man who had been dead for (4) four days in his mobile home. A baby, near death, was also found with him. Fortunately, the baby was saved.  In hearing this story, I could not help but ask myself, why? Did someone not miss this man in the (4) four days after his death. The danger in isolating ourselves is that often times we isolate ourselves from the help we may need. On the downside to this, Go It Alone approach to life is that, we do not make opportunities to get to know the people that live around us.  There is a name for people we don’t know. They are called strangers. We are taught at an early age that strangers cannot be trusted. I am all for protecting children. However, I do believe that it is an overkill for mature adults to shut out individuals we might encounter only because we do not know them. It is easy to think the worst about people we don’t know After all, that gray haired lady shopping on isle seven at the grocery store might be a shoplifter Furthermore, The man that walks his dog by your home every morning might be a burglar.  While it is a good idea to be cautious and use common sense when it comes to safety thinking that everyone around you is a threat is ridiculous. It is more likely that the gray-haired lady shopping on isle seven is a lonely widow whose nearest family resides in another town or state. Also, that man who you see walking down your street with his dog might actually be someone who moved to the area to accept a new job.
It has been said, stranger's are friends we haven’t met yet. I think we all need to be open to making new friends. A warm smile can be as refreshing as a cold glass of, diet Dr. Pepper on a hot day. There have been many times when a stranger said a word of encouragement to me when I needed to hear it most. I believe all one needs to know is that somebody cares. In fact, there are many people and organizations that have the right idea when it comes to reaching out to others. A small church in my living area has a permanent message below their sign. It says, come as you are. You’ll be loved.
